Os primeiros a habitar o Queens foram os índios da tribo Rockaway, uma área próxima à Jamaica Bay que ainda mantém esse nome. Em 1635, os holandeses se estabeleceram na área, seguidos pelos britânicos 20 anos depois. Em 1898, o Queens escolheu juntar-se a Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn e Staten Island sob a "nova" cidade de Nova York, enquanto algumas cidades decidiram permanecer independentes. Em 1910, a ponte Queensboro e o túnel East River (o túnel do centro) conectaram o Queens a Manhattan pela primeira vez e, mais tarde, a ponte Triborough em 1936 e a ponte Bronx-Whitestone em 1939.
