Those who live in New York City, better yet, those who live in Manhattan have always considered
, the city green lung.
Central Park in the Age of Social Distancing
Small ponds, cycle paths, running paths,
woods, football and
baseball fields, concert bandshell, theater, skating rinks, ice hockey fields,
outdoor swimming pool, the Zoo, and the
Conservatory Garden, the coveted arrival point of the
most famous Marathon in the world,
New Year's Eve fireworks... in short, there are many appointments throughout the year as well as reasons to experience this incredible park and it is clear that
every New Yorker has a "personal relationship" with this Park, especially now during this COVID-19 pandemic.
In March, when New York began to face the
ruthlessness of COVID-19, timid flowers were begging to blossom around Central Park, spring gave its first signs of arrival with the
iconic cherry trees and the first leaves sprouted all around us. The Park was telling us that life was going on bringing hopes for better days ahead of us. Even if New York City is still on a break, the "Stay-at-Home Order", since March 18th,
Central Park has always been open, and we New Yorkers, only us because slowly the city has emptied out of all tourists (and even some "residents" too,) we still enjoy the Park in search of
some fresh air and some mental and physical escape from the lock-down.
An
infinite thanks to all the Conservancy Staff who makes sure that the park remains clean and accessible to all during COVID-19.
Spring 2020 will be remembered like no other Springs in NYC. For many, a spring lived through a window. As far as I'm concerned,
I had the opportunity to cross the park on a few occasions and for two different reasons. The first (most important) reason for Grocery Shopping, I live in the Upper East and the safest and most convenient supermarket is in the west about 10 minutes walking across the park. On average every 7/9 days, we go out to buy food. The second reason, for my physical and mental well-being. As we have been invited to go out only when truly necessary, I usually make my 2 reasons coincide and only go out every 7/9 days for grocery shopping while enjoying the park ... 2 birds 1 stone kinda thing. By scrupulously observing the social distancing guidelines, wearing my mask, and respectful of others,
I had the opportunity to photograph and film the passing of the seasons in the park ... from winter to the green spring.
We collected this passage in a
video that we want to share with those of you couldn't join us in New York this Spring.
