When we will return to traveling, the
La Guardia Airport will have the opportunity to make us forget the 56-year-old Terminal B, defined by plenty of frequent flyers as third-world material, which still welcomed millions of travelers before COVID-19.
Yesterday,
Wednesday, June 10th, 2020, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo formalized the
opening of the new Terminal B of LaGuardia Airport, although there will not be many travelers to enjoy the
brand new arrivals and departures halls at the moment as here in New York tourist attractions are still closed and air traffic has been drastically reduced and the number of passengers has decreased by 95%.
It was a silent and simple celebration, the
Gov. announced the opening and cut the ceremonial ribbon with a few invited guests, who all wore masks and kept the social distancing.
"We needed it today," said Cuomo. "
We needed to see New York on its feet and shine again."
The pandemic has allowed the port authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages La Guardia, to speed up the construction of the airport,
another terminal is expected to open by the end of next year, while the station for an AirTrain that should connect to the subway line N (yellow line,) 7 (purple line) and Long Island Rail Road is still uncertain as funds are currently lacking from the federal government.
When everything is over,
New York will have its first completely new airport, and let's consider that the last major airport that opened in the United States was Denver International Airport 25 years ago!
We plan a visit to our new LaGuardia Airport as soon as possible, perhaps with a small video to show you what the new Terminal B looks like.
