Starting on
Wednesday, May 6th, the 24/7
NYC Subway System will start
closing every night during the COVID-19 emergency
from 1:00 am to 5:00 am in the morning to facilitate the cleaning and sanitation of all trains and stations.
The subway in New York the
only one that operates 24 hours a day in the United States and among the
few in the world, has always been the hallmark of the city.
Over the past few decades, the
service has only been briefly
suspended during the storm of 2015, Hurricane Sandy, and
immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The temporary night closure was decided by Governor Cuomo in agreement with Mayor De Blasio, to
allow time for intensive cleaning and sanitification, and at the same time
try to solve the problem of the homeless, who have always used the subway as a shelter overnight but even more so duing the COVID-19 pandemic
Sarah Feinberg, president of the New York City Transit, said in a statement that "t
he subway system should not be used as a substitute for shelter." "
It is not good for our customers, it is not good for our workers and it is not good for New York homeless people who deserve much, much more attention," she said.
New York City is and will always be
a city open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, said the executive director of Riders Alliance, Betsy Plum, the
closing cannot be a long-term solution "and at the same time while the subway service is disrupted, a safe, reliable and frequent bus service must be guaranteed as a replacement. "
Roads closed to traffic and Citi Bike Expansion
From the mayor De Blasio also
the announcement of wanting to close some roads to traffic to allow more
space for pedestrians and bikers to stay outdoors while keeping the social distance. Initially, we will have
40 miles to arrive at 100 miles before the summer.
There is also the plan to i
ncrease and expand the Citi Bike system, the only means of transport that has seen a surge since De Blasio has encouraged New Yorkers to walk or pedal to get to their office.
