At this time only a 30% of passengers have switched to the new system, but by 2024, the old MetroCard will be completely eliminated and everyone will have to adapt to the new OMNY system. We will keep you updated with all the latest info.
WHEN CAN YOU USE OMNY
OMNY is already available & in used across the city, but it will not be mandatory until 2024, when the historic yellow MetroCard will become obsolete ... an heirloom to keep!
WHERE TO USE OMNY
At all subway stations and on all buses operated by MTA, on commuter and Access-a-Ride trains. Get ready to say goodbye to the usual swipe!
PAYMENT OPTIONS
1.From Smart phones or the latest generation watches - smartwatches - via your phone's digital wallet (via Google or Apple Pay.)
2.Microchipped + Contactless credit/debit cards: Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, UnionPay and JCB are all accepted.
3.With the rechargeable prepaid OMNY Card that you can buy at points of sale on this map ( https://omny.info/retail-locations).
Be careful: OMNY cards cost $5 and last seven years. The reload (refill) options include several types of fare, some already active others being defined, including the reduced rate (for Seniors), one way ride, and unlimited weekly and monthly rides in the future. With the same card, it will always be possible to get the free transfer from Subway to Bus and the transfer window remains two hours.
HOW MANY RIDERS CAN I TAP-AND-GO WITH MY OMNY CARD
With the same card you will be able to validate entry for up to 4 people, so if you are a family of five or more with only one device or card, you will need to get another.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE PHONE BATTERY
If your phone turns off you will not be able to operate your OMNY (we still recommend a portable charger.) In the Subway stations there are no charging stations, available instead in the new buses.
PRIVACY:
The OMNY card can be used either anonymously or through your OMNY account. If you decide to create one, in this case you will need to provide: name, age, photograph, email address, password, address, telephone number, payment information, geolocation information, and more.
