The Vessel Reopens at Hudson Yards
After a three-year closure,
the iconic Vessel at Hudson Yards has reopened to the public, inviting visitors to once again explore its unique architectural wonder. The 150-foot-tall structure, designed by
Thomas Heatherwick, became an instant sensation when it first
opened in 2019, drawing tourists from across the globe to experience its intricate honeycomb-like design and
breathtaking views of New York City. However, following a series of tragic incidents in 2021, the Vessel was shuttered, leaving many wondering if and when they would be able to climb its stairs again.
Now, with enhanced
safety features in place, the Vessel is once again
ready to welcome visitors, offering a reimagined experience that balances the beauty of the structure with improved security. Officials at Hudson Yards have emphasized the importance of ensuring both the safety and enjoyment of guests, and they've implemented significant changes to achieve this goal.
The first two levels of the Vessel are
fully open, while higher levels, except for the top floor, have been equipped with protective steel mesh screens. These discreet but effective barriers allow guests to experience the full scope of the structure’s design while providing a safer environment. This thoughtful approach ensures that the
Vessel remains a beloved tourist attraction without compromising visitor well-being.
"Not a day goes by that we don't have visitors asking when it will reopen," said Jeff T. Blau, CEO of Related Companies, the developer behind Hudson Yards. "We're excited to welcome guests from all around the world
back to the Vessel with additional safety measures in place."
For
New York City residents, the Vessel offers a special perk—
free admission on Thursdays with proof of residency. Otherwise,
tickets are priced at an accessible
$10, making it an affordable must-visit for tourists and locals alike.
The Vessel’s design and fabrication, which took place in Monfalcone, Italy, at a cost of over $200 million, remains a testament to innovative architecture, blending artistry and functionality. Every aspect of the Vessel is uniquely crafted, from its joints to its handrails. The 75 massive steel components were meticulously produced
in Monfalcone - Italy by renowned fabricator Cimolai, and then transported from Italy in six shipments and then across the Hudson River via barge. The assembly process, which took three years, transformed the pieces into one of
New York City's most iconic structures.
The
reopening of the Vessel signals not just the return of a beloved landmark but also a renewed commitment to the visitor experience. As one of Hudson Yards' most striking attractions, the Vessel continues to captivate, offering an inspiring blend of modern architecture and sweeping views of the cityscape. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a longtime fan, the Vessel's reopening is a reminder that some of
New York’s most iconic spaces are constantly evolving, enhancing the way we experience the city.
